Maths IS FUN!

Monday 29th September 2014

What a great start to the week!

This morning in Numeracy we continued to practice our mental methods and written methods for addition and subtraction.

After this we used our amazing numeracy skills to play an addition and subtraction card game called 'Pyramid.' We loved it!

Finally this afternoon we began to uncover the secrets of the past. We studied a range of artefacts and thought about what they might be and how they might have been used.

Wow! I did not know that....

Friday 26th September 2014

Another great week in 3P has drawn to a close. It has been a very busy week but we have really enjoyed it. We have learnt how to add and subtract tens, we know how to write a great book review and we have been studying the properties of different rocks.

Today we finished our presentations. It has been great learning all about each other and seeing the different objects that people cherish.

Can you guess what Jamie likes to do?

Now it is time for some rest and relaxation.

I wonder what will happen next week?

What an exciting day!

Today we chose our two representatives for the School Council. Those children who wanted the opportunity to be a part of the school council went home last night and prepared a speech. This speech explained why they believed they would make a good representative.

This afternoon the children delivered their speeches to the class and then we voted on who should represent us.
It was an extremely tough decision and the votes were very close. However, we did manage to chose a boy and a girl.

The winners: Katie and Hao Ping!

Good luck Katie and Hao Ping.

In other news:

Today we finished our book reviews! You can find these on our pages so please pop over and have a look.

We hope they encourage you to read the books that we enjoyed.

It has been another busy day in 3P today.

In Literacy this morning we identified the ingredients of a GREAT book review and began working with a partner to create our own. We are reviewing the Anthony Browne books we have studied in class and we cannot wait to share our reviews with you tomorrow.

Here is Miss Gorst's example to give you a taste of what is to come.

Miss Gorst's example.

In Science we began to identify the properties of rocks.
We studied a range of different ones, for example there was Limestone which is a sedimentary rock.

We then generated words we could use to describe the rocks.

After this we used the Explain Everything App on the IPads and recorded our observations.

Tuesday 23rd September 2014

Today we have been reviewing our mental methods for addition. We looked at ways we could quickly add numbers such as 9 and 11.

We had great fun!

In Literacy, we have been reading another Anthony Browne book.

While reading this book we discussed the characters personalities and discussed which character we would rather be friends with.

Stay tuned to find out more about the characters.

Finally....

 'Is a diamond a rock?'

Here is Alfie's response to the question posted by Mr Willis.

After studying The Rock Cycle yesterday Alfie went home and did some independent research.

"I was really interested in the topic and I wanted to find out more." said Alfie.

He also went home and practised counting in two's ready for our Y3 competition.

Fabulous work Alfie!

In other news:

We also answered our Science question of the week.

Do you know why water is colourless?

Take a look at the information below to find out why.

Our new Science question of the week can be seen down the side of the blog.
If you can help up to find the answer we would be extremely grateful.

Today we began to look at 'Into the Forest' by Anthony Browne

While reading the story we looked carefully at the pictures. One of the things we discussed was why Anthony Browne had used colour for the little boy but kept the forest in black and white.

We had lots of thoughts about the colour choices. We thought it might be because the little boy was the main character. Another idea we had was the little boy was opening stories within his story. Therefore the characters were in black and white to show they were from a different place.
We also thought that the black and white images reflected his imagination because he enjoyed listening to Grandma's stories.

We really enjoyed reading the story and thoroughly enjoyed looking at the pictures. We spotted lots of different things in the illustrations. Can you?
Take a look at this picture below and see what you can find hidden in the forest.

We have now started to create a story maps and we look forward to sharing these with you.

Tuesday 16th September 2014

Today we have been looking at summarising a story. We have talked about what we would need to include in a summary and how we can make it precise and exciting. We have started looking at how we can use five sentence summaries to do this.

Here is one we created as a class. What do you think?

Can you write a five sentence summary for a story you have read?
We would love to hear or read yours!

In Art we are learning all about Still Life.

A still-life is a picture of objects that don't move (inanimate objects). E.g vases, bowls of fruit, bottles. It may be a drawing or a painting. The artist looks at the objects and studies their shape while thinking about where the light will hit the objects and where the shadows will be created.

We began this topic by sketching a bottle and a ball.

Here is Miss Gorst's first sketch:

Next we will learn all the techniques we need to help bring our pictures to life. We will look at shading, proportion and how we can make our objects look 3D.

Stay tuned and our masterpieces will soon be revealed.
